Figure 4.3 The lighting diagram. My light was lowered on the stand and placed behind the wall, which was behind the subject, to keep out of view. The flash was zoomed in to 105mm to make a narrow light stream, optimal for bouncing.

Note the lighting diagram in Figure 4.3 . Imagine if I had set up my flash in the same position behind Alex, but forgot to zoom the flash to 105mm, leaving it at 24mm. Can you guess what the image would look like? Because the light spread would’ve been much more broad (think shotgun versus rifle), the light would have been much more even and spread out by the time it hit the wall in front of him, meaning less light would return from the bounce, leaving him several stops underexposed.

When it came time to color grade my image, I knew that I wanted to convert it to black and white, with a blue colorcast to it. I started by adding a gradient adjustment to the left half of the image, lowering the exposure ( Figure 4.4 ).
